TCM
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a 2000 year old history and refers to a broad range of practices, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage techniques, and dietary therapy. These practices remain a large part of medical care throughout East Asia, and are now becoming more recognized in the provision of healthcare in the western world.
Over the course of more than 2 millenia, TCM has formed a highly effective system to diagnose and cure illness, an approach which is inherently different from that of western medicine. In TCM, the understanding of the human body is based on the holistic understanding of the universe as described in Daoism, and the treatment of illness is based primarily on the diagnosis and differentiation of syndromes.
TCM’s view of the body is less concerned with anatomical structures than with the identification of functional entities, such as those which regulate digestion, breathing, and aging. While good health is seen as harmonious interaction of these entities and the outside world, disease is taken as a disharmony in interaction. TCM diagnosis involves identification of patterns of disharmony, and a session often starts by taking the pulse and looking at the tongue of the patient.
